Spring Break - Option #2, Eagelcrest

We can skip backwards, in four-inch heels, holding a very dirty Martini, and not spill a drop. Yet we can seem to manage the coordination and balance required to slide gracefully down a hill with boards strapped to our feet, let alone execute a jump like that! Oh well, we can't be perfect at everything; the knowledge of which is the only thing that keeps us humble.

For those of you who enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, may we present to you, Spring Break Option #2 (Silver Fox Hunting being option 1, naturally) - Eaglecrest! Eaglecrest is just a short 35 minute drive from campus. They have runs ranging from the little blue circle all the way up to a double black diamond, as well as a snowboard park and an awesome sledding hill! At least Spike the Whale (our mascot) seems to enjoy it!

Not planning on bringing a car to school? No worries, kittens, the Eaglecrest bus will provide transportation for only $6.
Want to know more? Check out Eaglecrest’s website at http://www.juneau.org/ecrestftp/index.php which is the same place where we lifted these photographs.

This Spring Break we're hunting for Silver Fox
We were flipping through the gazillion channels on our friend’s television the other night and ran across a news segment by the guy above (the seriously crush-worthy Anderson Cooper) regarding the horrible mess in Mexico fueled primarily by our country’s love of drugs (theirs), and our willingness to trade copious amounts of our other two loves (cash and guns) to get the goods. The problem has gotten so bad, especially in the border towns, that American college students are being cautioned to stay out of Mexico during spring break.
We watched our boyfriend, Anderson, go on about the dire situation in Mexico (and it is dire, kittens, spend a minute googling and educate yourselves) for the whole segment and where so horribly depressed about the haps that we just weren’t sure what to do with ourselves. Luckily, we ran into this guy, the other love of our lives…

As always, Jon made us laugh and helped to ease our worried minds a bit. But then we noticed something, of all the yummy visages gracing the viewbox, we are inexplicably drawn to these two. While we aren't nearly old enough ourselves to enjoy the company of a man who is, shall we say, of a certain vintage … we certainly have a thing for silver foxes.
So now the dilemma is this, what do we do for spring break? Mexico is out, so perhaps hunting for silver fox? Look, there’s one now…

His name is Gary Wilson and he is in our Financial Management class. Unfortunately, that class is web-based, which is great for those students who are trying to juggle family or jobs while pursuing their degrees, but not so great for those of us who enjoy hunting for silver fox. Oh well, I guess we shall just have to admire from afar, Gary Wilson.

Art at UAS isn’t restricted to student boards and gallery shows. There one day and gone the next this Artist: Unknown is a guerrilla, with a wicked sense of balance. There is, in fact, a random group of artists (or perhaps just one prolific individual?), who simply cannot contain themselves when it comes to self expression.
We are fully aware that many of our darlings live in a world (suburb or city) where they do not feel comfortable sharing their sparkle, especially those who have had your spirit squashed by the nastiness of high school politics. At UAS you don’t have to hide what makes you great. Share and celebrate, kittens, share and celebrate!

Business up front, Party in the back
Okay, we confess, this image has very little to do with UAS. In fact, it was taken at the Douglas 4th of July Parade last summer. But we are going to include it in today's post. Why? Well, darlings, isn't the answer obvious? Because this mullet is freakin'awesome and it would be a crime not to share it with the world. Clearly, what we have here is a prime example of a man who lives by the business-up-front, party-in-the-back paradigm.
And, really, isn’t the mullet strategy something that we should all live by?

Battles of Fire and Water

One of the best things about UAS is its proximity to, and partnership with, the award-winning Perseverance Theatre (PT). For our kittens who find that they enjoy the glow of the limelight, check out the outstanding theatre program offered by UAS in conjuction with PT here http://www.perseverancetheatre.org/Perseverance_Theatre
If you find that lime just isn't your color, don't fret darlings, you get to get to play too - by going to the plays.
The newest production offered is called Battles of Fire and Water. Check out this description form the PT website...
“The Russians say they won. The Tlingits say they never surrendered. Who gets to tell the story?
In 1802 and 1804, the Russians and Tlingit fought bloody battles over the place we now call Sitka. More was at stake than mere turf: What is the relationship of a culture to its land and past? What is at the heart of communication? When does it become necessary to take up arms? This conflict shaped the future of the Tlingit people, the Russian Empire, and Alaska.
Based on a landmark book by Richard and Nora Marks Dauenhauer, Dave Hunsaker intertwines accounts from both sides, bringing Baranov, Lisianskii and the famous Kiks.ádi warrior K’alyáan together to tell this thrilling story.”
Now here is the very best part… UAS students get to attend for only $17; a $10 savings. If $17 still isn’t within your budget, you can go on “pay as you can” night, which is exactly as it sound. Wanna see a play, but you only have a quarter, that’s plenty! We firmly believe that a student shouldn’t have to choose between food, beer, the arts, etc. Thanks to PT, UAS students don’t have to.

Fresh off of our promise to not plagiarize, we are going to... well, plagiarize. This little beauty was posted on the student art board outside of the art department, and we snapped a picture one day while strolling by. Artist, unfortunately, is unknown. As mentioned previously, we are thrilled to give credit where it is due, so don’t be bogarting the name of the artist if you know it!

Rules of the Game
Welcome back, kittens. Before we go any further, there are some things you should know.
1. This blog is completely ours. It is not sponsored, condemned, condoned, edited, or approved by anyone employed by the University of Alaska Southeast, or the University of Alaska System, which is convenient because it allows us to say whatever we like.
For Example: We are thrilled that our favorite Economics professor has brought technology into the classroom by writing her lecture notes on a PC tablet and then projecting them on a screen. We see things more clearly now and adore the pretty colors of the graphs. However, we miss the days of her turning her back to us to write on the chalkboard. We found watching her work to be an additional incentive to attend beyond the joys of learning about quantities, both supplied and demanded.
2. As we are extremely conscionable, will try our very best not to plagiarize in any way. However, sometimes we just won’t be able to give credit where it is due.
For Example: One of the secret treasures of UAS is the random art found on campus. We are completely wowed by the talent of our fellow students, and plan on regularly sharing our finds with you. However, much of the art we’ve recorded is Artist: Unknown. We shall immediately remedy the situation should any of you lovelies be able to provide us with a name!
3. We were taught at a tender age that there is a rather large difference between telling someone to shut-up and asking them to please be quite (Can you guess which resulted in a tussle on the playground when we were wee little ones?). We aren’t malicious – though we aren’t above objectifying those with the wicked hot trifecta of brains, looks, and personality as per the example in item 1.
Any comments should, at a minimum, reflect an equal level of generosity and grace as our original post.
As an aside, we are not above making up new rules as we go along; a skill handed down by older siblings who firmly believed that, when playing Monopoly, the oldest child should always be the Banker, and that the Banker was entitled to rents due when landing on their own real estate investments.
